Our discipline program is designed to maintain a safe environment for all students. We reinforce our expectations and standards, and encourage all of our students to respect each other and take responsibility for their own behavior.

Classroom behavior management plans are in place in every classroom at Foothill Oaks. Teachers continually reinforce behavioral expectations and consequences. Teachers use a variety of strategies to teach students appropriate behavior. They also utilize a variety of consequences to reinforce appropriate behavior.    All other staff members may use incentive to encourage students to assist with our school community. There may however, be incidents where a student’s behavior necessitates a referral to a higher authority. The following interventions may be used to correct student behavior:  

• Formal Time Out: This time-out lasts for approximately 20 minutes away from the classroom. The student makes phone contact with parent/guardian, and completes an Action Plan regarding the incident/infraction.
• Citations: A citation is issued for repeated misbehavior that has not improved despite previous verbal warnings. (Citations may also be issued for more serious first time offenses.) The citation is issued to the student and they are given the opportunity to respond in writing to the incident. The student signs the citation and takes it home for parent/guardian signature. (The parent signature does not necessarily indicate agreement, just receipt. A parent may request additional information at any time.) The citation must be returned to school the next school day and given to the classroom teacher.
• Principal Referral: A Principal referral is issued to document more serious and/or repeated infractions. Consequences may include time off recess, Saturday School, parent conference, implementation of a behavior contract, suspension, and referral to SARB. The student will be given an opportunity to respond to the incident. Parent contact is made when a child receives a referral.  Reasons for referral include, but are not limited to: (Ed. Code 48900)

1. Disruption of school activities
2. Defiance of authority
3. Use of profanity
4. Threatening physical injury
5. Continued classroom/playground disruption
6. Overly aggressive behavior

• Suspension: Suspension is the removal of a pupil from ongoing instruction for adjustment purposes. Suspension shall be used for more serious offenses. NOTE: Severe offenses, such as fighting, will result in MANDATORY SUSPENSION at home for all responsible parties. Suspendable offenses (Ed. Code 48900) include, but are not limited to:

1. Threatening, attempting, or causing physical injury
2. Weapons on school grounds
3. Theft, robbery, extortion, stealing or damage to property
4. Obscenity
5. Damage to school property
6. Controlled substances/drug paraphernalia
7. Disruption of school activities or defiance of school authorities
8. Sexual harassment

Bathroom: Recess is the time to get drinks and use the bathroom. We strongly discourage students from using the bathroom during class time. Students using the bathroom during class time miss instruction. We realize that emergency situations arise and we promise to be sensitive to special needs.  

1. Students will use the bathroom during recess.
2. Students will not play in the bathroom area. 
3. Students will maintain the bathroom in a clean condition.
4. Students will respect the privacy of others in the bathrooms.
5. Students will not destroy anything in the bathrooms.  

Drinking Fountain:

1. Students will use the drinking fountain during recess.
2. Students will stand outside of the red box while waiting to use the drinking fountain.  

Playground:

1. Students are to stay on the playground area at all times.
2. Students will use playground equipment properly.
3. Students will participate in the games taught and reinforced to them by the grade level team teachers. Students are to play the games following the school’s game rules.
4. Students will demonstrate non-aggressive playground behavior.
5. Students will demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times.
6. Students will use and respect Conflict Management strategies to solve disagreements.
7. When the FREEZE BELL rings, all students are to stop playing, get off equipment, and FREEZE.

Caught Ya’s – Raffle tickets given to students caught doing the right thing! These are redeemable for various prizes.  

Lifeskills Assemblies – Award assemblies that recognize model citizenship. Students receive a pin during the designated skill assembly.  

Academic Assemblies – Award assemblies to recognize academic achievements. Academic success is directly linked to student behavior.  

Extracurricular Activities – Foothill Oaks hosts Grade Level Performances, Fall Carnival, Literacy Fiesta, Book Fairs, Student Service Committee, and a variety of  other evening  events. 

Grade level events and class parties are held in many classrooms. Participation is based on behavior.
